A Year in the City - It is the simple (simple seeming) story of a little girl, Jenny, who lives in a high-up apartment, and a little boy, Peter, who lives in a ground-floor apartment next door.
Season by season they see things in the city: Gergely's pictures show us what they see.
High panoramas looking across roof-tops towards busy harbours, or crowded streets: trains and factories, shops, schools, parks.
Spring comes first, and, season by season, each prose description culminates in a quatrain.
Painters paint the railings red,
Tulips bloom in tulip bed,
Pushcart men with flowers shout,
Hurdy gurdies wheel about.
We see workmen digging up the street, revealing the cables and pipes and tubes that are the arteries of the busy city. We see huge excavations down into the ground as a building site is prepared, and the building begins. We see the seasonal changes of plants, flowers, fruits and traffic. We see the children going to the shops to buy new clothes, to start school.
